Tool Mentor: Searching the RUP web site
This tool mentor describes how to search the Rational Unified Process web site.
Tool: Rational Unified Process
Main Description

Overview

When looking for process guidance for a particular task or for the use of a tool in the context of a project, frequently the existing views do not allow you to find what you want easily. The RUP search function uses a sophisticated engine that returns sorted results based on the nearness of search terms in the body, whether they appear in the header and the numbers of times they occur.  This enables you to quickly find the material you need.

The following steps are performed in this tool mentor:

Launch Search

Start the search engine by clicking on the Search button on the right side of the gray bar above the RUP content page.  The search dialog box will appear.

Enter Search Terms

Enter search terms in any of the four boxes that appear on the right hand.  Your choices are:

  • Any word: The search engine will look for every page containing any of the search terms.
  • All the words: The search engine will look for every page containing all of the search terms.
  • Exact phrase: The search engine will look for every page containing the search terms in the exact order entered only.
  • Without the word: This works in conjunction with search terms entered in one of the three boxes above.  The search engines looks at the result set from that search, then discards results containing the terms in this box.

You have the option of searching either the RUP process configuration, or searching the developerWorks®: Rational® Web site. The default is RUP.

You can also show more or less than 10 results (the default) in the results space.

Execute the Search

Click on the 'Search Now' button on the right of the dialog. The results for your search will be displayed in the search dialog below the boxes for search terms. As many results will be displayed as you have selected (default ten). You have the option of selecting the next set of results.

If you have selected developerWorks: Rational as the section to search, a separate browser window will launch with developerWorks: Rational in it.

Select a Search Result

Select the search result that is most relevant to you. If you are searching RUP, the page with that result will appear in the RUP browser. Select the RUP browser to see the page.

If you are searching developerWorks: Rational, the resulting page will appear in the same browser as the search results.
